January 4, 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of Louis Braille's birth. Louis Braille was born in Coupvray, France and is famous for inventing the system of raised dots which permits people who are blind to read through their fingertips.
July 26, 2009 marks the 19th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA is the civil rights law for eligible people with disabilities. It was updated in the U.S. Congress in 2008 to clarify the original intent of the law.

Final legislative update for the First Session of the 52nd Oklahoma Legislature.
Of the 116 bills which we were tracking this legislative session, 16 House bills and 5 Senate bills were signed by the Governor. None of the three House Joint Resolutions passed through deadline.

architectural design standards, and technical assistance
publications.
Documents on the CD ROM are provided in a variety of
formats, including HTML, WordPerfect, and text (ASCII),
to enable people with disabilities and others to gain
easy access, translate materials to braille, or use
screen readers. Many documents are also provided in
Acrobat PDF format so that they appear as they do in
print and permit the publication to be reprinted by
personal computers.

In order to ensure that Title II non discrimination, accessibility and other requirement are met by state entities and that individuals can easily identify the ADA coordinator of the state. The Office of Disability Concerns has provided the following list of state agency coordinators.

The Office of Disability Concerns ( ODC, formerly Office of Handicapped Concerns ) is an independent state agency whose purpose is to help state government develop policies and services that meet the needs of Oklahomans with disabilities.
ODC serves as a resource, to people with disabilities, who want to present their views and recommendations to the Governor, the State Legislature and State agencies.

The Office of Handicapped Concerns is getting a new name. Beginning November 1, 2007 this office will be called the Office of Disability Concerns. This name change resulted from passage of House Bill 1084 in of the Oklahoma Legislature last year.
I applaud this effort which will reflect a more current terminology in our agency name. We will continue with our agency mission providing accurate and timely information services, technical assistance and advocacy. We act as an intermediary for persons with disabilities and provide services to those with disabilities.
